Why Russian army is in Georgia now

Just a note for my friends overseas. I've checked some informational agency available to the western public, and want to make a short note to answer just this 1 question.

Short:

Russian peacekeeping force was under attack by superior Georgian forces and was reinforced to be able to survive and work on its mission of stopping violence in South Osetia

Long:
There was a Russian peacekeeping contingent in South Osetia (Ossetia), when Georgia started the bombardment of Tshinval (the capital city of Osetia), followed by armor and infantry assault on that city Russian peacekeeping force was obliged to stop the violence, but their limited contingent is not sufficient to withstand Georgian attack, supported by artillery and armor. More then that, peacekeeping forces were attacked by Georgian military, with 10 dead and about 40 wounded in the first day. So as it is stated in the mandate of peacekeeping forces they requested support from Russia.

First thing the regiments of 38th army did upon entering Tshinval is forced Georgian out of city, getting to the Russian peacekeeping camp, to get wounded from the fire and to bring them supplies (the convoy with wounded was under artillery fire from Georgian army on its way back to Russia). Now Russian peacekeepers are trying to shutdown artillery and airbases which provide the Georgia with ability to bombard Tshinvali city, to clear the place of Georgian snipers, which deny the rescue teams to get to the ruins with people beneath them, shoot citizens who try to get to water wells etc.
